World Parkinson's Day
In 1817 a London doctor by the name of James Parkinson wrote an essay in which he described a condition he referred to as the ‘Shaking Palsy”. We know this as Parkinson’s and he was the first person to give a clear description of the condition. His observations were based on six people he had seen, either in his own practice or around his neighbourhood. His description was so comprehensive that the condition was later named after him.
World Parkinson’s Day, on 11th April, celebrates James Parkinson’s birthday. The day is held to continue James Parkinson’s appeal for further research, to raise awareness of Parkinson’s and promote the need for accessible services.
On World Parkinson's Day, Parkinson's WA encourages those with Parkinsons's, their family and friends to be positive, get active and learn more about the condition.

'Park Art' every Wednesday at The Niche
Park Art has come to an end for 2009, but will commence again in February 2010.
Come along to our fun art sessions especially designed for people with Parkinson's.
Participating in Art releases chemicals in the brain which are beneficial in the long term for relaxation and depression. Art also provides an opportunity to exercise your hands and eyes, improving hand-eye coordination. Research also suggests that Parkinson's actually enhances creativity! Experience in art is not a requirement.
All art materials are supplied and a donation towards morning tea is appreciated. Please phone on (08) 9346 7373 if you are interested in attending the art sessions. If transport is an issue please do not let it stop you. Phone us and we'll be most happy to talk to you about attending.
Contact the office on (08)9364 7373 for more information and to find out details for 2010
