Education for Health Professionals

In the metropolitan area the Parkinson’s Nurse Specialist (PNS) Service provides an educational role to ensure informed care. Educational sessions may be arranged to address specific topics. Bookings well in advance of the date required are necessary.

We also provide specific Health Professional education in the south west of WA via our locally based nurse specialists, at the Bunbury office. Other regional areas are supported on an annual basis – please email info@parkinsonswa.org.au to discuss.

Overview of Living with Parkinson's

The Parkinson's Nurse Specialist Service is committed to providing education to facilities and health professionals. By increasing the knowledge base of all health professionals, the quality of care available to people with Parkinson's will be enhanced.

The education sessions can be tailored to suit the needs of the facility or they may be more general in nature. A popular format is a 60-90 minute presentation giving an overview of Parkinson's. The time frame is based on how much time the facility is able to allocate, but the minimum to allow for the information available is 60 minutes. This presentation addresses the current theories on the cause of Parkinson's and anatomy and physiology of the affected areas of the brain. It also provides an overview of the impact of Parkinson's on daily living including mobility and communication. This session is ideal for aged care facilities who may have residents affected by Parkinson's.

Additional presentations are available for health professionals such as physiotherapists and occupational therapists.
