Anna Brotherson’s Solo Swim
Anna Brotherson’s father was diagnosed with Parkinson’s just over a year ago. To support her dad and Parkinson’s WA, the very fit City Beach mother of three took on the challenge to swim solo to Rottnest in the 2017 Karma Resort Rottnest Channel Swim. All the while with the goal to raise $5,000 for Parkinson’s WA.
Sadly, Anna Brotherson’s attempt to swim solo to Rottnest Island on Saturday 25th February, ended in when she had to withdraw from the race just 1.5 km from the finish line. Anna was pulled unconscious from the water with lungs full of fluid. She had suffered a swimming induced pulmonary oedema which is becoming more common around the world during triathlete and endurance events. Although lacking oxygen, with 10% lung capacity and with a core temperature of 33 degrees she was struggling but wouldn’t give up and was still swimming before slipping into unconsciousness.
Fortunately for Anna her support crew consisted of two very experienced nursing sisters (a close friends and sister Sian), who managed to provide prompt and critical care before she was raced to Fiona Stanley Hospital where she thankfully made a full recovery.
Anna spent months training for this event and fundraising for Parkinson’s WA. She has raised just under $19,000 for our cause which is a remarkable effort. We extend our heartfelt thanks to Anna, her family and friends and her many, many supporters who contributed funds to us.
We are very proud of Anna’s achievements and wish her and her family very best wishes and good health.
