What is NDIS?
NDIS is the National Disability Insurance Scheme funded by the Federal Government for
Australians aged under 65 years ‘with a permanent and significant disability.’
What does NDIS do?
NDIS aims to provide assistance to people that qualify by funding access to ‘reasonable and
necessary supports they need to live an ordinary life’ to participate in the community and
employment. This can include assisting or providing access to community services, assistance at
home or services such as transport. There is a focus on encouraging individuals to make personal
choices about the support that would be beneficial to themselves.
Do I qualify for NDIS if I have Parkinson’s?
If you are aged under 65, are an Australian citizen or permanent resident you will need to be
assessed. If you are diagnosed with Parkinson’s you are not automatically deemed to have a
disability. However, living with Parkinson’s could mean you require and are eligible for assistance
with everyday tasks. Assessment by NDIS will establish your eligibility.
How do I get assessed for NDIS?
You need to contact NDIS directly to be assessed. They will be able to provide you with
information about their access requirements, including:
- Availability of the scheme where you live
- Your age
- Your residency status
- Your disability
- (In some cases) Your early intervention requirements.
You will be sent an Access Request Form to complete.
Is NDIS available in my area?
NDIS is already available in some parts of Western Australia (WA). The NDIS will continue to roll
out on a geographic basis and is anticipated to be fully rolled out across WA by 2020. When you
speak to NDIS they will be able to advise if and when your area is covered by NDIS. Full and
up to date details on the roll out are available on the NDIS website here.
