Singing-Postponed due to COVID-19

Singing Support Program

Following advice from the Department of Health, Parkinson’s WA has decided to take precautionary health and safety measures and put our Support Groups on hold for the foreseeable future. Therefore, our Singing program will be cancelled as from Monday 23 March. We hope to resume this program  as soon as possible but the safety of our Parkinson’s community must remain a priority. Thank-you for your understanding.

Our singing classes in Mirrabooka and Manning are for people diagnosed with Parkinson’s and their partners/carers.

Recognising that the challenges people with Parkinson’s come up against are similar to those that people with other neurological conditions face, Parkinson’s WA is passionate about broadening our service and extending our reach. So we are now offering our Bunbury singing class to anyone with a neurological condition.

Singing out loud is not only fun, it is also beneficial for people with Parkinson’s as it exercises the lungs and abdominal muscles. Singing is known to be a natural mood regulator as it provides a heightened feeling of wellbeing. The words of each song are transmitted on a large screen so everyone can sing-along together. No previous singing experience is required, just an enjoyment of music and a desire to come together with others in song.

Our singing teacher Jo Allen is a singing guru with over 20 years of experience spanning across performing, choirs, schools and singing workshops – and she is well loved by the singing class participants. Jo loves to take requests and the groups now have a repertoire of over 180 songs – and this is still growing. The groups also enjoy the social aspect of attending singing as well as singing as a group – some people even get up and dance together!
