We are delighted we can provide information about the following community programs to the Parkinson’s community. 

There are a number of interesting and varied activities that people with Parkinson’s can benefit from, including improved strength and agility, coordination, balance and flexibility, not to mention good fun and the opportunity to meet new friends!

Singing with Jo

Jo welcomes everyone for a fun-filled Thursday morning of singing, where everyone will sing their favourite song, from every era and style. These sessions help to increase voice strength and articulation, as well as breath capacity, through warmups and group singing. A wonderful community who celebrate life in song. All are encourages and very welcome to join in.

Cost: $10 per session (includes morning tea.)

Times: From 9.30 am for a 10am-12pm session, with a 20 min tea/coffee break at 11.00am

Location: Multipurpose room – Shelvock Sports Amenities Building, Shelvock Crescent, Koondoola

Yoga

Specifically for people with Parkinson’s

We offer Neurological Rehabilitation services to improve quality of life, functional abilities and independence for people living with neurological conditions. Our physiotherapists have an expertise in neurological rehabilitation.

YOGA FOR PARKINSON'S

Four specific exercise based PD treatments backed by level 2 evidence is recommended:

•    Cuing strategies to improve gait

•    Cognitive movement strategies to improve transfers

•    Exercises to improve balance

•    Mobility and strength exercises to improve physical capacity

Times: By appointment (one hour classes, bookings required)

Yoga for Parkinson's

Yoga is great way to develop flexibility, strength and balance and also helps us relax. No previous experience is required. Both floor and chair-based classes are tailored to the needs of people with Parkinson’s. The class involves gentle stretching, simple but effective yoga postures, breathwork and relaxation techniques. You will not be twisting your body into knots or doing headstands!

Class size is limited to 15 people and carers are encouraged to enrol if there is a space.

Time: Wednesdays (in school terms) 9.45am – 11.00am (one hour class, followed by morning tea, bookings required.)

Location: George Burnett Centre, Manning Road, Manning

Cost: $180 for a ten-week term.

Tai Chi

The Tai Chi Support Program run on a weekly basis and includes a free morning tea afterwards.
This program is open to everyone with a Neurological condition (including Parkinson’s) and their partners/carers.

Lifespan Dance - Seated Dance Classes

Lifespan Dance is endorsed by Dance for Parkinson’s Australia with professional DP trained dancers leading seated dance classes within communities across Perth and Peel regions, as well as outreach classes into aged care and hospital settings. There are also performative opportunities throughout the year.

There are numerous physical, cognitive and social benefits to these classes and Lifespan encourages you to keep moving to music in a dignified, expressive way that works best for you. The classes are structured in a way where you can enjoy moving to music, in a safe and supported space – your chair. These classes are suitable for people with Parkinson’s, MS and other conditions that limit mobility. Carers and family members are welcome to attend.

Lifespan Dance offers Seated Dance classes to the Perth & Peel community in four locations:

  • Wembley Community Centre
  • DADAA Main Hall
  • Mandurah Performing Arts Centre
  • Koorliny Arts Centre, Kwinana

Class cost is $15 or a 10-class card for $130. This includes morning or afternoon tea.

PD Warrior

PD Warrior is a unique therapy approach that aims to improve your mobility and to help fight the symptoms of Parkinson’s.

PD Warrior was created in 2011 by two neurological physiotherapists in Australia and provides those with Parkinson’s a rehab program to help better manage the symptoms and live well.

Cost:
Initial assessment for one hour $140 (rebatable with Private Health Cover,)
2nd assessment- for one hour $120
Thereafter one hour classes are $35 each

Boxing & Balance for Parkinson’s

Work on your balance, strength and flexibility with this new program with qualified personal trainer, Lesley French. For Balance for Life classses, there is also online membership available for those that are unable to attend. These classes work on connecting mind with muscles whilst building strength and balance.

Due to number restrictions, it is important that participants book in with Lesley prior to starting.

Participants will need to bring their own boxing gloves and pads and it would be a great advantage if a carer or partner can also attend so that work can also be done at home to assist with improvement.

Strength for Life

Through Council On The Ageing Western Australia (formerly known as Living Longer Living Stronger)

Strength for Life is an evidenced strength-based program that encourages and supports the achievement in improved health, quality of life and fitness in people over 50 years. It was designed by sports scientists to build muscle, improve balance and reduce chronic illness. It has been running for over 15 years and helps over 3,500 older people per year in Western Australia.

Each participant will need a doctors referral form completed. Once you know which tier you are referred to, you can contact your nearest provider to book an initial assessment into the program. Each participant will have an assessment with a trained Strength for Life Instructor, who will put together an exercise plan for you based on your needs. From there you can do your exercise in a fun, enjoyable environment with an instructor available to help them if required.

Cost: Best to check with your health provider
Tier 1 provider: Up to $90 an hr for initial assessment with $15 per class for non-concession & $12 for concession.
Tier 2 provider: Up to $65 for initial assessment and $10 per class.

Stay on Your Feet Presentations

Stay On Your Feet® offers free presentations which help to educate older adults on the important steps they can take to reduce their risk of falling. They offer free presentations to the community offering advice and cover all of the ‘Move, Improve, Remove’ tips, or focus on specific topics such as home safety, physical activity and eating well. Performance Pilates and Physiotherapy

Performance Pilates & Physiotherapy tailor their therapy to assisting those that want to improve balance, coordination, strength and agility.

Sessions are one on one initially with the goal for participants to ultimately join a group session.

Cost: Initial assessment with a physiotherapist to assess client’s needs is between $180-$190 (with Health Provider rebate available.) Second consultation is $90 (with Health Provider rebate available) with group sessions $40 thereafter (with Health Provider rebate also)
